Let's Play Voyage of a Drake

Post by Inky »

Time for something completely different!

Voyage of a Drake by Samonella is an RPG where you play as a drake named Voadar, and go around exploring, talking to people, stealing all their stuff, solving some puzzles and fighting the occasional battle along the way. It’s a lot of fun, I'd recommend checking it out if you haven’t!

I’ll be playing campaign version 1.0.2 on Wesnoth 1.14.4. I did a really quick playthrough already but skipped a lot of the optional stuff; I'll try to do as many side quests as I can this time. The entire campaign is basically one big scenario (some parts take place on other maps), so I'll just be splitting it up into parts based on whatever I feel like :P

Here's the very beginning!
Part 1 – Meeting Meaty
Image

Image
So he finds himself an awesome pet dragon, that’s pretty cool!

Image
Aaand he just uses it for farm work. This guy doesn’t have much imagination.

Image
We start off with the optional tutorial.

Image
Why didn’t you ask when we were right next to each other…

Image

Image
When we’re next to someone, we can right click on them (or hover over them and use a hotkey) to talk to them or show them an item.

Image
What's in it for me?

Image

Image
Okay fine, what do you want?

Image
Great, he’s going senile and leaving his stuff all over the place.

Image
We head to the orchard southwest of his house and start poking around.

Image
Cool, we got an axe, let’s go chop some heads off!

Image
We head over to the field to show the axe to Cadameron. When choosing to show an item to an NPC, we get a list of any items we have that would get a response from them.

Image
Unfortunately we don't get to keep the axe so our dreams of becoming an evil axe murderer are dashed.

Image
These are the usual four response choices we get when talking to people. We decide to yip happily.

Image
We head over to Cadameron’s house. Moving onto his house transitions us to another area.

Image
Ooh, let’s trash his stuff while he’s gone!

Image
Aw, looks like we can’t rob Cadameron.
…yet.

Image
We take a moment to jump around on his expensive bed.

Image
Anyway, back to what we came here for.

Image
Well, having an axe was fun while it lasted.

Image
Before telling Cadameron of our amazing axe-storing accomplishment, we check out the stables really quick.

Image
There are some horses around, but we can’t do anything here at the moment.

Image

Image
Sighhh, okay what now?

Image
Cadameron’s cow Meaty has outlived her usefulness, and he enlists us to do the dirty work.

Image
Ha, what’s a cow going to do against a dragon?

Image
Whoa! Voadar gets into an epic battle with Meaty. Embarrassingly, Voadar is taking quite a beating.

Image

Image
Voadar rains down fiery retribution on Meaty.

Image
R.I.P. Meaty. I’m not sure getting burned alive was a “quick, painless death” but on the bright side we’ve already cooked the meat.

Image

Image

Image
We gorge ourselves on poor Meaty’s remains, which ends the tutorial.

***

Image

Image
Cadameron’s been gruesomely murdered! Could it have been animal rights activists? Or is it something more sinister?

Image

Image
We find ourselves alone in the valley. Let’s take a look at our items.

Image
Ew, we’re carrying that around?! Trying to use the item here doesn’t do anything (unsurprisingly.)

Image
Cadameron’s body probably isn’t even cold yet, and we’re already robbing him.

Image
But hey, free stuff is free stuff.

Image
It looks a bit small for him actually.

Image
If we need to, we can rest on the bed to skip turns while recovering HP. The campaign has a 24 hour day/night cycle, with characters doing different things depending on the time of day.

Image
When we move next to the brazier, Voadar lets out a puff of fire…

Image
…and lights it up. It’s much cozier now.

Image
We pay another visit to the stables. Now we can pick up hay, which will make a horse follow us around.

Image
It even follows us outside. We can’t do anything with it now (it won’t follow us to Raplice) but it may be useful later.

Anyway, the only place to go from here is the town of Raplice to the north, so we head there by moving to the signpost.

Image
Here’s Raplice. We’ll start exploring the town next time!

Drake-related campaigns are very very weird ... the storylines are often strange.

Take that other one where a drake flies away from humans chasing him ... then suddenly walks
into a cave. Hmmmm. Where there are dragon slaying dwarves. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

So when I look at that then I am not surprised about a drake hobo stealing the food from the
farm people. Perhaps we could call them not drake but rats-with-wings instead.

I really hope so. This playthrough looks awesome and I already finished reading (watching?) "Lets play After the Storm".
