Did the creators of this game work on the sprites of the soldiers or were they for free for people to use?

I was just wondering because the pixel art for the soldier sprites look like they're from a jrpg and I was wondering if the creators got them from somewhere, or they made those themselves. The portrait artwork and the art of the soldiers on screen look kind of different.

All the artworks were made by the community. That's the power of open source

Yeah, actually, they were all made explicitly for this game and many many artworks that were not good enough were turned down, and several of the portraits with through several revisions until with come up with this complex pseudo-realistic style that took several hours for a top notch professionally trained artist to do for their portfolio. Ironically, we still have the same basic sprites. You could probably go through all the rejected and old artwork here and come up with stuff for several new fresh looking games.

I wouldn't say that. All the sprites have gone through a complete overhaul since version 1.0, and many of them are on their third version. Just as much care went into their style as the portraits'. It's a challenge to make them instantly recognizable even on complex terrain, but they are.
