This depends on the version of Wesnoth that you want to use.
From the Discord logs (10th of June, 2018):

Code: Select all

<stevendale> What was the last working version of Wesnoth on Windows XP?
<Iris>1.12 worked on Windows XP except that it had an interesting sound-related crash that we could never track down.
<Iris>1.14 is reported to run on Windows XP, but I have no idea about its reliability. 1.15.0 and later will not run on Windows XP at all.
<Iris>(Also do note that if you do run Wesnoth 1.14 on Windows XP we will not provide any support for issues that involve its interaction with the platform.)
So, to recap (with some colors to make it more readable):
  • 1.10 runs on XP
  • 1.12 runs on XP, but there might be a crash that could affect your machine
  • 1.14 seems to be capable of running on XP, but is completely unsupported
  • 1.15/1.16 and newer releases won't run at all on XP
Current maintainer of these add-ons, all on 1.16:
The Sojournings of Grog, Children of Dragons, A Rough Life, Wesnoth Lua Pack, The White Troll (co-author)

in my experience all 1.14.x releases up to and including 1.14.15 have a strange issue with their fonts making it hard to read (happens only when running them under windows XP), it seems to be fixed in 1.14.16
1.14.17 is last 1.14.x release but it throws exception in windows XP when it is closed
1.14.16 does not do it so it seems like version of choice for windows XP users, yet to test it extensively though

what else was changed in 1.14.16 and 1.14.17?
these versions seem to be omitted from official changelogs:
https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth/blob ... angelog.md
author of: Altered Era/Ruleset (AKA "Altera"), latest version is on add-ons servers for BfW 1.16 and 1.14, latest version also still supports BfW 1.12 and 1.10, 1.10 server is stuck with older buggy version)

For 1.14's changelog, you want this link instead:
https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth/blob ... angelog.md

However, there's not much there that looks as if it could add a new exception. The only C++ change that was missed from the changelog doesn't look likely either, as it was a fix in the multiplayer server. Maybe a new version of the libraries that Wesnoth is built with added it?

octalot, thanks

looks like very few things were fixed and added in 1.14.17 so 1.14.16 seems like a version of choice for windows XP users
there is no portableapps.com version of 1.14.16 but wrapper from 1.14.3 seems to work with 1.14.16

do not know enough about C/C++ to answer this kind of questions...

what is "Version 1.14.17+dev"?
it seems to be distinct from 1.14.17 without "+dev"
author of: Altered Era/Ruleset (AKA "Altera"), latest version is on add-ons servers for BfW 1.16 and 1.14, latest version also still supports BfW 1.12 and 1.10, 1.10 server is stuck with older buggy version)

"1.14.17+dev" is a placeholder name for anything that's developed on the 1.14 branch after 1.14.17. There's unlikely to be a 1.14.18 release, so I'll start this example again with the 1.16 branch ...

"1.16.1+dev" is a placeholder name for anything that's developed on the 1.16 branch after 1.16.1, these +dev versions will eventually lead to 1.16.2.
