Tournament organization:

No seeding is used.
Beaten players continue to play (read the end of this post: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php ... 01#p518401 about the way the final standings will be determined)

Round 1
Three pairings will be organized, the last one on Friday, December 16th, 2011, 21:00 GMT
This way was chosen so that players can play and still new participants may register. Also some players could have died by old age, as they registered long time ago.

Deadline for Round 1: January 31th, 2012 (games must be finished)

Round 2:
After Round 1 participants will be split in two divisions: Winners of Round 1 will compete in Division A, and beaten players will compete in Division B.
Players are paired.

Deadline for Round 2: March 31th, 2012 (games must be finished)

Round 3:
Participants are split in four divisions:
Division AA (win+win), Division AB (win+loss), Division BA (loss+win), Division BB (loss+loss)
Players are paired in Divisions AA and BA.
The system for Divisions BA and BB will be determined later: the players may be paired, or bigger groups may be created - it will depend on the final number of the participants.

Deadline for Round 3: May 31th, 2012 (games must be finished)

_____________________________________________________________
the result won't be accepted unless you attach the final save, for more details read "Game organization / Providing information about your game"

Game organization

Post by SlowThinker »

Match organization
(rules and hints for players)
number of games
In order to win the match, a player must beat his opponent in two games (so results 2:0 and 2:1 are possible).
'Two games' is a minimal but optional value. Anytime players can change the number of required wins in their match, but only if both agree. They must send their new setting to the public tournament thread.
Example: Players feel that 2 months is plenty of time, and they accept to play a 5-win match. Later they see it is not so easy, and they accept to decide their match by 3 wins only.
Game organization
(rules and hints for players)
Providing information about your game
Use this thread for the next stuff:
Please try to inform about the playing time in advance, so that observers may come and watch online.

This is a requirement so that any game result may be accepted:
Post the result with the final save or the final replay. (in place of the save / replay you can post a link to http://replays.wesnoth.org/1.10/, but only if the replay is not corrupted. More details about the bug that corrupts these replays are here: corrupted replays at replays.wesnoth.org.)

(Where is the directory of Wesnoth saves/replays located?
It is the directory Wesnoth1.8/saves/
Where to find the "Wesnoth1.8" folder? Read this article:Where is my user data directory? (this article explains where a default user data directory is located)
)
How to set up a tournament game
In order to advertise the tournament, choose an appropriate title. For example:
"Conquest Tournament, Abc vs Xyz, Round 1, Game 2"

---------------------------------------------
Next settings are obligatory
they cannot be changed (even if both players would agree):
  • Conquest variant: Conquest Minus
  • Mode: capitol
  • In the game lobby set:
    • Observers: on
---------------------------------------------
Next settings are optional,
These settings are default but may be changed if both players agree to:
  • the newest version of Conquest Minus (remember 3.0.14 and 3.0.15 have problems with reloaded files and 3.0.19 is not recommended either)
  • In the game lobby set:
    • Use map settings: on
    • No timer
  • Map: Conquest- Surdmark (teleports, long distances),
  • 1 vs 1 (so players control only side 1 and side 2)
  • starting distance between foreign villages: 22
  • Spawn Ratification:
In the very beggining of turn 2 (before the red player has moved), "Spawn Ratification" goes on: both players proclaim whether they ratify the start or not, and they should do it "simultaneously" - they can trust one another or to PM their decisions to a referee / neutral person. Each player is allowed to refuse max. one spawn (per a game).
So without a referee the Spawn Ratification goes this way:
    1. Both players privately decide whether they ratify the spawn or not
    2. Players ask one another "Ready for the spawn ratification?". After both players agree ...
    3. Both players reveal their decision
    4. If both players ratified the spawn then the game may begin
The optional settings can be changed any way: for example you can use any map, set sides any way (like 2 vs 2 - both players control 2 sides, 4 vs 4 ...), you can use any starting distances, you set a timer ...)
The Spawn Ratification may be replaced by playing a Pre-made game. But both players must agree to this and they need a neutral person that will prepare a balanced game start for them.
More here: How to create pre-made Conquest Minus games)

---------------------------------------------------
Save the game when it ends / when it is interrupted.
Hints
Game saves
Set autosaves ON.
If you have to interrupt the game, both players should save before any player leaves (this may prevent some Wesnoth bugs)
What to do if one player disconnects:
The player who disconnected should save the game (if possible).
The player who stayed (he becomes the hosting player) should save too and reload the game.
Unfortunately one of Wesnoth's weaknesses is: it is not always easy not to reveal opponent's map after the disconnection: the problem happens if it is a turn of the disconnected player and there is no observer who can get the control of the disconnected side provisionaly (so that the game may be saved and the hosting player doesn't see his opponent's map). What to do?
  1. first the hosting player should reconnect with another nick, so that he can communicate in the server lobby.
  2. if the disconnected player has the save then he can reload that save
  3. if 2. is impossible then players can ask a kind man to go observe their running game in order to get the control of the disconnected side provisionaly and to allow to save the game
  4. if 3. is impossible then the disconnected player can return to the running game, but he needs to put any other (cover-)window over Wesnoth's window, so that only the upper status bar is visible. The status bar shows the current turn number and player's flag, and so it allows to determine the moment when the replay ends and the cover-window may be removed
Sometimes the Wesnoth's "no-gold, no-move bug" happens after a disconnection: then you need to return to an autosave or an older save or you can use this solution: no gold + no move bug
How to reload a game:
If the non-hosting player comes with a different nick then the hosting player needs to release him from his slot(s) and then to fill his slot(s) again.
How to pause a game during an opponent's turn:
Sometimes you need to go away during the turn of your opponent, or you don't want to wait for individual moves of your opponent - in such situation you can pause the game by invoking any dialog - for example Ctrl-P.
If you are the hosting player then try not to pause a game during a turn of Neutrals (white), otherwise the Neutral turn is paused too.
(Also a good idea is to use game speed 16 during your turns and a slower speed (for example 1) during opponent's turns)

  • Berserkjaguar-SlowThinker
    tauno-trankiloman
These 4 players got an exception because it is preferred there are 12 players in Division A rather than 10 (read next)

if Gyudan/BLAST don't finish their match in time then the 1st finished match of Berserkjaguar/SlowThinker, tauno/trankiloman will be accepted (of course it must be finished until February 15th). Then we have 10 players in Division A.

Re: TOURNAMENT: Conquest (announcements)

Post by SlowThinker »

Unimportant announcements:
obsolete
  • KussMar dropped his idea to create a website for the tournament. Any volunteer for this work is welcome.
________________________________________________________________
Important, but old announcements:
(last edit: March 31th)
obsolete
  • I remind: deadline for Round 1: January 31th, 2012 (games must be finished)
  • I will remove all pairs that won't show any mark at least one player is living (by playing at least one game, informing me their communication has been established, or complaining according to next point) until January 15th
  • You may need to re-read the tournament settings. They were clearly split to obligatory / optional (=default) parts.
obsolete
  • if you have problems to communicate with your opponent or can't establish games then complain in the other thread TOURNAMENT: Conquest as soon as possible. This is because if your games of Round 1 won't be finished in time, and only one player caused it then the other player will advance to the next round.
If you have a very serious reason why you might not be able to finish your games until the deadline then inform me until January 15th and there is a possibility you get an exception for the deadline.
obsolete
People that seem to be dead (they can still show up until January 15th) are marked bold:

So far the dead pairs are:
  • chriss - Darth-reven
  • Nauzhror - grrrr
  • H2L - Kaiser
  • Annalise - XyLoX
KussMar, BLAST, Gyudan, Lich_Lord have dead opponents so far:
  • KussMar - Cond0r
  • Conrad-BLAST
  • reality - Gyudan
  • Lich_Lord - Redbox
In case their opponents don't show up until January 15th, there is a possibility to re-pair KussMar, BLAST and Gyudan and Lich_Lord (and maybe also substitute players - Gwledig, C4theslayer ...), so that they don't miss Round 1. But it depends also on total number of living players.

The possible next pairing (or rather re-pairing) of Round 1 would take place on Friday, January 20th, on the 1.8 game server. I say it is only posible, because it depends also of total numer of players that stay in the tournament.
I need that anyone from the list of players with dead opponents ((KussMar, BLAST and Gyudan and Lich_Lord and maybe more) & substitute players (Gwledig, C4theslayer and maybe more) who
  • wants to be paired
  • has enough time to manage to finish his games between January 20th and February 15th
informs me by a PM or in the public tournament thread until January 19th.

Current players with dead opponents who don't want to be re-paired will advance to Round 2 free.
obsolete
The 4th pairing of Round 1 has been done (see the post with pairings above).

The substitute players: Conrad, C4theslayer, Gwledig
are asked to say whether they want to play and have enough time to manage to finish their games until February 15th. Please say it in the public tournament thread until January 25th .

The deadline for Round 1 stays set to January 30th, only the re-paired players get an exception up to February 15th.
I must decide what to do with pairs that won't finish their games in time - whether both players lose or only one.
I remind you should complain in the public thread if needed (see the post above) and also watch whether your opponent complained about you. You can concede in case you think it is clearly your fault the games weren't played in time.
obsolete
Amangon and DSidious reported some problems with the establishment of their games:
Prokon - Amangon
gargant - DSidious

So now in order not to lose Round 1 by default gargant and Prokon need
  • to write in the public tournament thread and explain the situation
    or
  • to finish their games in time
obsolete
The pairing of Round 2, Division A has been done.
The pairing of Round 2, Division B has been done.
You can start your games.
obsolete
Read my post "Round 2" above:
Read the end of this post. It contains these new points especially:
  • opponents can raise the number of won games that are required to win their match.
  • the final saves/replays must be reported
obsolete
The deadline for Round 2 is March 31th, 2012.
But the status is: in Division A 1 game out of 5 is finished, in Division B 1 game out of 3 is finished. Therefore:

The deadline is prolonged up to April 10th, but on a first-come first-served basis:
Division A:
4 winners are preferred, then 2 winners. So if 5 players will win their matches until April 10th, only first four results will be accepted; if 3 players will win in time, only first two results will be accepted. (One result exists already, Ikerpeta is the 1st winner)
Division B:
2 winners are preferred. So if 3 players will win their matches until April 10th, only first two results will be accepted. (One result exists already, Zbyll is the 1st winner)
The moment of a match submission = the moment when last save/replay has been posted to Tournament: Conquest
Of course all games that will end until March 31th will be accepted without any limitation.
obsolete
end of Round 2, start of Round 3:

Division AA (two wins):
Players: Ikerpeta, Amangon (both won within the deadline), Gyudan (won by default).
The 4th slot will be filled by the winner of first finished match (DSidious - buz, Lich_Lord - xy), under condition the match will be finished until April 10th.
The moment of a match submission = the moment when last save/replay has been posted to Tournament: Conquest
the pairing has been done
Division AB (win + loss):
Pairing: after April 10th.
Players that don't finish their matches of Round 2 (and so lose by default) are asked to confirm until April 10th whether they want to play Round 3, otherwise they won't be paired
Any player who finished/ finishes his match and is not willing to play Round 3 is asked to announce it until April 10th.
Division BA (loss + win)
Players: Zbyll (won within the deadline), SlowThinker (the first winner after the deadline)
the pairing (dtermining who controls side 1 in game 1) has been done
Division BB (loss + loss):
Pairing: after April 10th.
Players that don't finish their matches of Round 2 (and so lose by default) are asked to confirm until April 10th whether they want to play Round 3, otherwise they won't be paired
Any player who finished/ finishes his match and is not willing to play Round 3 is asked to announce it until April 10th.
________________________________________________________________
Any new player can register until April 10th, but he will be accepted only if there will be an appropriate number of players in Division BB (players with 2 losses)
obsolete
Warning: version 1.0.19 increases forest defense of human horses to 40%. So think whether you want to use it for the tournament. Version 1.0.20 reverts to 30% again.
Use Wesnoth 1.10

How to report a replay:
notice replays from replays.wesnoth.org may be buggy: corrupted replays at replays.wesnoth.org . Attach rather your save/replay file.

The pairing of Round 3 is complete.

Players didn't finish Round 3, apparently due to lack of interest.
The tournament organizer (SlowThinker) failed and retired. Anyone who can resurect this tournament is welcome.
