Re: since i don't have an active topic, too - portraits!
I think the head looks just a little small, and could possibly use a touch more neck. SOmething's bothering me in general about the head and shoulder junction, but I can't quite put my finger on it... I really like the way you've treated the rocky hide, though. Great start.

Nice and rock-like. And possibly child-like (I think because of the brow arch), it is a whelp after all.
Is it possible that the head/shoulder junction just looks off because the shoulder is not shaded?

So you're also a Pratchett fan? I just got "Nation" for Christmas, though I wouldn't mind a good Hnaflbaflwhiflsnifltafl set of my own.
As to the troll whelp - I love the rockiness of the hide, but I find the contrast a little jarring between the large, jagged musculature of the body and the small, smoother outline of the head. The head is also quite small for the body; this is in contrast with young humans, who have a large head relative to the body.
Would it be possible to test a version with a larger, rockier head?

I believe that the trolls are creaturas with the rocky skin, not creaturas of rock.
But I imagine that already you spoke with Jetryl about it before starting drawing.
Excuses for my translation google XD I hope that they understand

Re: since i don't have an active topic, too - portraits!
The head looks really good to me. The thing that bugs be slightly is that the rest of his body (mostly the forearm and hand) looks a bit too much like it'd literally be built out of stone - like a golem or something, instead of just being rather "rock-like". The leg looks fine as it is in that respect, though.
Re: since i don't have an active topic, too - portraits!
Me too. I think the body seems much older and more powerful than the childlike head suggests it should be. It does look nice, though.thespaceinvader wrote:I think the head looks just a little small

It may be a good idea when doing trolls to make the whelps have relatively smooth stonelike skin, and then have them get progressively rougher as they level up.

I'd reduce the rockyness factor by tad, but that's just my preference.
Otherwise, brilliant as always kitty!

Re: since i don't have an active topic, too!
next update on my whelp, quite a lot of changes based on your suggestions: bigger head, changed brainpan, softened rock-look on the arms...
@ spaceinvader: i'm not sure what bothered you about the shoulders, i changed them a bit - better now?
@ doofus: thanks, i hope the expression is still childish enough...
@ sangel: yeah, pratchett is great. i can't wait till nation comes out in german. and please tell me that you had to look upt the spelling of hnaflbaflwhiflsnifltafl! the whelp's head is bigger and rockier now.
@ nehuen: i'm not sure of which material trolls are made of - the race description isn't specific, but i toned down the rocky appearance of his arms.
@ zookeeper: i decided to trust your knowledge about the world of wesnoth and you said the leg was fine, i changed the arms based on this.
@ corvus: head big enough now?
@ velensk: i imagine troll-skin behaving exactly the opposite of what you describe: rougher when young and getting smoother with age - just like stone naturally erodes.
@ woodmouse / trashman: thanks!
dude, i always forget how much attention and babble mainline work attracts!

I like it a lot more now, but I think it's eyes are maybe too dark, I mean, the sprite's eyes are bright red.
And congrats for your "promotion" Kitty.

Re: since i don't have an active topic, too - portraits!
Something still bothers me about the head and shoulder area. It might be to do with the fact that the upper arm is very short in relation to the lower arm and the deltoid - there seems almost no space for bi/triceps. The right shoulder also seems to be closer to the head than the left. One other thing, though - don't the sprites have only 3 fingers?
Looking good, though. I look forward to the adults.
