Dark adepts upgrade to Necromancers, and they're an exception anyway. There are lots of no-ranged units.

However, while strong is not a good trait for a Dark Adept to have, it's not completely useless. It gives a couple more hitpoints, and if an Adept advances, they get a close range attack. In fact, strong is fairly good for a Lich, since it increases their melee damage from 5 -> 6, and thus their normal drain amount from 2 to 3.
