ok.. it actually does seem to be because of version difference. The assertion error pops up as soon as I select the replay in the load menu, and it comes up with something about an assertion error, str() (string size??) and C:\Entwicklung\Wesnoth yadayada which gave me the impression that it was due...

trouble loading replays

Hello I'm getting trouble loading replays that I download off these forums. I get some kind of assertion error and I think it's because I installed Wesnoth in my G:\ drive whereas most have it in their C:\

Is there a way to watch replays short of reinstalling wesnoth?

As much as spearmen are better than poachers, you cannot recruit both from the same faction. If you are loyalists then sure spearmen are great. As knalgans the closest thing you got are guardsmen. the spearman has more hp and does much more total damage than the poacher. but, we already know that the spearman is good compared to a lot of units for its cost. it's hard to compete with this guy. spearmen are not archers. here's another piece of drake wisdom:

If the enemy sends to you a solid, well balanced group of units that you cannot possibly hope to best in a direct confrontation, then as they approach you, MAKE A BEELINE FOR THEIR LEADER.

Often the kind of units a a drake cannot defeat, can be outrun.

I'm not sure about this kind of survey. It doesn't show for example that Drakes have only one very weak and auxiliary source of impact damage, or that the so called versatility of elves has more to do with their terrain bonuses and with all but one of their units having melee + ranged.

my newbish advice: do not attempt to "hold ground" with their units and try to retreat at dusk. position your units for maximum reach. on a map like blitz, that means in the water in the center(obviously if there aren't any pesky merman around) Don't position your units for defensive bonus...
