I hope Dauntless will jump in sometime soon and say something, but in the meantime:

Full TGT statistics:

Image

The most popular map was Loris River, played 9 times. Short after are Xanthe Chaos with 8 plays, Clash with 7, and to my big surprise, Underworld with 6. Paths of Daggers are long behind with only 3 plays. And, of course, there's the memorable bat rush on Castle Hopping Isle. I wonder why PoD is so unpopular it was played fewer times than the not-so-interesting Underworld :hmm:

As usual, this thread is now open to general discussion about the future of The Grand Tag, downsides of this edition or 2v2 games in general. Also, this is a good moment to say how I was a terrible admin, how you lost because of bad luck, how the map list was rubbish etc ;)

One point was already made by Snowman (whoever he is):
Snowman wrote:One thing that perhaps could be improved is the openness. The tournament is announced in the lobby when the registration is open but the places are very soon filled with people who follow the fora or by those who took part in the earlier editions and are invited by email
Funny how this is said every time a TGT edition finishes. The problem here is that before I (and probably all my predecessors) opened the registration phase I'd had no idea how many player would join. Especially this time, since TGT hasn't been around for 2 years. And actually the player list didn't fill so quickly: by the end of round 1 there was only one reserve team left and I'd need 7 more to consider changes in the tournament structure. However, now that we all know that 2v2 games are still alive, maybe next time we'll manage to gather more participants and think of something else.

Cheers,
Dunno

I checked the dates: the registration phase began on July 29th (I believe Dunno sent out invitational messages to all the former participants in the beginning of July), the team list filled up on August 19th, while the last two teams who joined the reserve list on 19th and 20th got to play as well. So basically everyone who registered in the 3 weeks since the official beginning of the registration phase got to play, even people who registered after the registration phase was over.

Of the 33 players who participated in this TGT 18 were completly new, i.e. didn't participate in any previous TGT's, so I don't buy your theory of small elitist circle, Snowman ;)

As to the tournament announcement, we always try to get as many participants as possible, but it is hard for us to reach every player and there will be always people left, who didn't hear about the TGT early enough to join in time.

Basically we have 5 means to reach out to people: via pms, forum-thread, server-notification, hosting a game with announcement in its title, and the word of mouth (inviting players through personal conversations/spamming games with "join the TGT"-messages/announcing it on other wesnoth boards etc.). All of this was done. What we could however do next time, is to contact the current admin of the Ladder site and ask him to make an announcement about the TGT on the front page. I believe Rigor did it for us in the 2nd Edition.
If you have any wishes or suggestions concerning the TGT or just want to drop me a message, pls pm me at: alpha1_pm

About the registration period:

I agree with Snowman, it is too short, and it makes it hard for players who don't already have a team set up. Even if you *do* follow the forums somewhat regularly, I don't think I noticed TGT ads until registration had been open for a week. That leaves very little time to find a partner, less than two weeks. I had other reasons for not trying to signup, I decided I was too busy during this time to make the commitment. But still, the registration period was a factor. Even if, as you say, teams which registered after the period got to play, newcomers won't be aware of that so they will be discouraged anyways.

Sure, but how many of the teams had at least one member who was a TGT veteran? Was there any team made all of newcomers? If TGT is not a closed elitist circle then there should be a significant fraction of teams which had no previous affiliation, and may have just seen the server ad and made a team. Edit: Looking at the list it looks like this did happen but only for 3/16 teams: Bounce & Bubbens, Winged Cudgels, and Cerberus team, Afaik. I am just searching the handles on TGT2 and TGT3 pages, so I could have missed some or some people might have changed their handles. It seems like it would be a lot healthier if, say, half the teams were like this.

Maybe next time the organizers can try to put up a server ad 2 weeks in advance of registration period open? Or increase the registration period to 6 weeks or more? This would leave time for a newcomer to do the following:

1) Be oblivious to TGT for first two weeks of registration period
2) Starts chatting with other players in public games about making a team, tries this for two weeks
3) Still not having found a teammate, makes a forum post searching for a match, and hopefully all such people are matched up in the last two weeks.

Also, there would need to be enough slots that they don't pretty much fill up immediately with veterans who already knew TGT was approaching, as Snowman says. Maybe two weeks advance server ad would help with this. At least, if some veterans don't get a slot the organizers are more likely to make more space for them, whereas maybe not if only newcomers get locked out.

iceiceice: I think it's natural that most teams had a last-edition participant. Isn't this how games spread? After playing the TGT you invite your friend to it and form a team. So counting new players instead of teams is more appropriate here, I think.

Anyway, last time an idea of 24-team edition came up and I wonder if there's still interest. Round 1, or maybe round 0 would be played by 16 new teams (or teams that didn't make it to quarterfinals in any edition) and then 8 teams would advance to Round 1 to face 8 veteran teams and then everything would proceed as usual. This would require much more admin work, and much more interest among players, but I think it's manageable. Especially if we make it next year, shortly after a successful edition. And to give more time, I guess we could make the thread and set up all announcements 1-2 weeks before the actual start of the registration :hmm:

If there was a newbie round, me and a friend of mine might be interested. I think it might be a good idea. :)

List of teams not affiliated with previous TGTs:

5) Pffffff F.C. (NanRage & Danniel_BR) - GMT +1 / GMT -6
6) Team Name Pending (bumbadadabum & AI0867) - GMT+2
8.) The Motherlanders (nagafono & Keither) - GMT +4 / GMT +6

15) Cerberus Team (Cerber24 & Kalfat) - GMT +2

7/16

The problem with making the registration phase too long, lets say 6 weeks, is that people may become bored with waiting too long, lose interest, forget about their registration etc. This is especially true for the new teams, which are in general less reliable than the vets. It also has a cooling effect on everyones enthusiasm if people have to wait too long after the initial/round announcement have been made, as actually happened in this TGT (albeit for unrelated reasons). However I would like to hear more opinions on the length of the registration phase. If the community perceives it as a problem, I think we could figure something out to fix it by the time of the next TGT. (and/or see Dunno's suggestion above ;))
iceiceice wrote:Also, there would need to be enough slots that they don't pretty much fill up immediately with veterans who already knew TGT was approaching, as Snowman says. Maybe two weeks advance server ad would help with this.
There were 8 slots reserved for the vets in this TGT (just as in previous editions). The reason why we are doing it this way, is to ensure a certain quality of the games, since players who advanced at least to the 2nd round, are usually skillfull and reliable enough to both provide decent games and stick around long enough to actually play them out. Now this time around only 4 vets joined the tournament and got their reserved slots, the other 4 of the vet-slots were given to the new teams, after we waited for a longer period of time and it became clear that no more vets would join.

Really, I have nothing against critic and even welcome it, since it helps us to find and fix problems we wouldn't have seen otherwise, but lets try to keep it factual guys ;)

Actually, Rene was in TGT3 it looks like: http://forum.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=34519
I thought nagafono was a vet but now I can't substantiate that.
It's true the dev team is not TGT veterans but still they are insiders in some sense. Its not likely that they randomly happened upon the server ad and made a team, far more likely that they were previously aware of TGT through the forum. So I'm not sure it actually proves your point.
And Pfffff F.C. despite playing like vets are of course actually newcomers :)

So anyways I stand corrected, the picture was not at all as bleak as I suggested. 5 or 6 out of 16 depending on how you count the dev team.

Hello guys,
I would like to thank everybody for another amazing TGT experience.

Firstly, I would like to thank Dunno, the head admin, alpha1, his aide and tekelili, the amazing ceremony coder.

Secondly, I would like to thank all the players that participated in the event, as well as all the obs who made the games more thrilling.

I am really excited about winning the trophy again, as well as playing some really exciting games. Here I have to thank our opponents, especially Nerds R US, with whom we played 3 amazing semifinal games.
And all of this would not be possible without Snowman, my ally and friend who hopped in when neki left the tournament. I would like to thank him for his enthusiasm and unexpectedly steady gameplay ( :P ) and I hope he is equally excited about the title.
This is how I imagine him:
Spoiler:
So thanks for an amazing tournament and I look forward to TGT5 :)

Cheers

I have congratulated champions and organizers lot of times, so lets pass to self publicity... :P

Under my signature is a link to TGT Ceremony. There is an attachment of scenario that also contains a read_me file. It is explained how to use it very detailed. It also offers lot of different randomizations, so any future TGT admin can use it. If anyone is interested in an explanation about the weapons avatars buy, there is also a txt file explaining it.

Long life to TGT :)

Thank you to all the organisers for hosting this tournament, and to the players for making it fun to watch and play.
With almost zero 2v2 experience ( except for survival games ), it was like a whole new wesnoth experience which was both challenging and rewarding. I look forward to participating in the next TGT and possibly winning it. ^_^

As for the registration period, imho, i would like it as short as possible, just because i wouldn't like registering for a tournament and then waiting a month for it to begin. If one is actively interested in finding a partner or playing a tourney, 2-3 weeks is a good enough period.

Once again, thanks all.

Big thanks to the organizers and all players! Was fun to play and watch :)
Next time I'll make it past round one, I'm sure of it :geek:
And congratulations to Pffffff F.C. especially. I never would have thought I'd see Nan in the finals :D

I think the registration period was fine, a server message is nice regardless.
Before you make players wait for 6 weeks (like abhijit pointed out), you better organize a new tournament sooner ^_^

Hello, I'm new and want to suggest something.

To add a new section in the forum... called "Tournaments & Competitions".
There you can easily find all attemps and succed past events, including the previous TGT's.

Now I had to search in a labyrinth of topics to hit the official competitions from Battle for Wesnoth.
And btw, when you expect to organize the 5th edition. I will participate for sure. :D

Well there's no official date set, but if everything goes well (i.e no big complications in real life) it'll probably be held next summer. The rest of your post should go to the Website sub forum, I think. ;)
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?
