Vegastrike is an excellent open source free space simulator game. Just have a look.
For almost one year few things have been made, but the project still goes on!

But, be aware that your hatred will disappear for the six first months !

BTW, are you using SVN version of Vega Strike and is there a particular date you know is relatively stable?

No I don't use the SVN version of vegastrike, only the stable version which is 0.4.3 if I remember.
