Granted, this could be my system. Sorry it that's the issue, I know about nothing about fonts, or how I would make bfw use different ones.

I just spent an hour or so troubleshooting a terrain type (Dwarf Castle, lit) in [store_locations]. The gui said Cud^Ii, so that's what I used. Finally, thinking the gui may be reporting incorrectly, I opened the map editor. Sure enough, Cud^Ii, except in vi I could see that the character after the ^ is a capital I, not a lowercase l. In the gui (and this post as I type it), the two are indistinguishable. If that could be changed, it would help.
