I did suggest matre-de-arms, but that's French. Maybe we should change all the names so they fit more to the officer idea.

That's it! "Honorary Captain"!
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

...squire?...

I mean, if you are all in for counterparts...

Sword Master sounds fairly good, specially since the others are Fencer and Duelist. You know, i always thought these guys were those adepts at a special form of swordfight inside the kingdom. The army brought them and used them as some kind of special force (which would explain their price, i mean, you bring a fighting specialist to use in war). So, rarely, a mater would show up and wreck everyone up.

I don't know how to explain the crossbow though, but hey, in Wesnoth, maybe the fencing art is commonly sided with some crossbowery (is that a word?). Maybe they have a special crossbow which can actually aid in swordplay or-okay i'll stop now, i'm delusioning too much.

At the very least, get the French right: maître d'armes. Escrimer Captain? Fencing Master? Fencing Champion? Cutlass/Sabre Champion?

shwashbucklers are way too naval-orientated.

we have fencers, duelists and ... exactly: winners

We should call these champions, these ultimate survivers just what they are: winners. They are not quite the loosers that die as fencers or duelists, no, they win, they are WINNERS.

okay, how about blade master?

blademaster is already used by the drakes. I think Swordmaster is more appropriate.

I know we're not calling them musketeers, but the fencer line concept is very close - semi-elite specialists, proficient in swordplay. Thus, you could make the L2 the Guard Captain and the L3 the Duelist, as someone who is the top ace and best swordsman of the unit.

Blade master wouldn't bother me even if there is a drake version, but sword master would be very close to swordsman.

Maybe we could right into the storyline that a rogue dwarf leaked gun secrets to the loyalists, and duelists have dueling pistols, and the level 3 unit has a musket.
