One lousy hex

Just ended my first run through The Secptre of Fire - with a defeat, because Li'sar was ONE LOUSY HEX short of grabbing the sceptre, and in the monsters' trun that followed an undamaged Delfador was picked off by an Orcish leader, a troll whelp and a wolf rider. One hex more movement for her, or one...

Oops, I'm cross-eyed. Adjust 'standard' formula to actually match the table. Previewing didn't help ...

Perhaps: Level 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Loyal 0 1 1 1 2 2 2 ... Standard 0 1 2 2 3 3 4 ... That addresses the disincentive for standard units advancing from 2 to 3 but does slightly raise the cost of the highest-level loyals. The algorithm would be 1/3 round up for loyals, 1/2 round down for standard troops.

By the way, can anyone come up with an instance where the presence of additional genders 'Neuter' and 'Multiple' is actively harmful?

[sangel] That's not a complete fix because you still need to know a unit's gender. I think you'd need to /add/ the variations tag to cover all the bases.

Oh look, simulposts. gender=one, two, three could really cause some confusion because it's getting too far from the original intent of the gender tag. At that point it might be safer to introduce an iconid= tag (although I don't think that's a very good name for it). At present we have icon sets like,...

Nah, it wasn't just hacky, it was quite broken, really. :-) WML has quite a lot to it as scripting languages go and thus far I've barely scratched the surface. Using my bad example would just produce all the variations on 'Male/Female should be able to defeat Male/Female'. Daft, and/or unacceptably ...

1) I think I do understand them perfectly well, thank you. The primary purpose of the gender tag is to allow the selection of the correct icons and animations for units like the mage, which has both male and female icon versions available. The default gender for most units is male, but for some - e....

You need four genders, BTW, not the current two: Male Female, Neuter, Many. Should be painless to add these, and it means the hooks will already be there for when someone invents The Machine People and The Swarm.

Aha, found the right thread. Loyal/upkeep tweak: 1) loyal reduces the effective /level/ of a loyal unit by one for upkeep costs, combined with 2) one village supports /one or two/ levels worth of units. i.e. ten first level units need ten villages to support them, as now, but so too would ten second...

I can't find the right thread to post this on, as there was another one more pertinent. Never mind. This thread is close enough; it'll do. I wanted to post a new maintenance idea that might help with the loyal/high-level character dilemma. Current issue AIUI is that loyal units are considered too ch...
